<span style="font-family: "courier new" , "courier" , monospace; font-size: large;">The Chess Game<br /><br />A young man said to the abbot from the monastery, “I’d actually like to be a monk, but I haven’t learned anything in life. All my father taught me was to play chess, which does not lead to enlightenment. Apart from that, I learned that all games are a sin.<br /><br />“They may be a sin but they can also be a diversion, and who knows, this monastery needs a little of both,” was the reply. The abbot asked for a chessboard, sent for a monk, and told him to play with the young man. But before the game began, he added, “Although we need diversion, we cannot allow everyone to play chess the whole time. So, we have the best players here; if our monk loses, he will leave the monastery and his place will be yours.” The abbot was serious. The young man knew he was playing for his life, and broke into a cold sweat; the chessboard became the center of the world. The monk began badly. The young man attacked, but then saw the saintly look on the other man’s face; at that moment, he began playing badly on purpose. After all, a monk is far more useful to the world.<br /><br />Suddenly, the abbot threw the chessboard to the floor. <br /><br />“You have learned far more than was taught you,” he said. “You concentrated yourself enough to win, were capable of fighting for your desire. Then, you had compassion, and were willing to make a sacrifice in the name of a noble cause. Welcome to the monastery, because you know how to balance discipline with compassion.”</span>

Their primary role is to respond to the challenges the environment presents by providing the cellular apparatus enabling the brain's owner to assess current situations, compare them with past experience, and generate the appropriate emotions and hence actions. It is this evolutionary imperative within the particular line of descent leading to Homo sapiens that has resulted in our large and complex brains. As feminist sociologist Hilary Rose points out, Descartes’ famous "cogito ergo sum" should be replaced by "amo, ergo sum."</span>

The Varieties of Religious Experience "The highest flights of charity, devotion, trust, patience, bravery to which the wings of human nature have spread themselves have been flown for religious ideals." 1: This is a study of the psychology of original religious experiences, not religious institutions. Religious geniuses have often shown nervous instability, such as George Fox or St Theresa. Medical materialism, sexual origins refuted. Perhaps the neurotic temperament is best to receive religious inspiration. 2: Religion is the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men, in relation to whatever they consider divine, which is always solemn. Christian saints callous to disease in a unique way. Religious men alone have self-will happily subjected to the divine. 3: The deities are known only in idea. Kant and Plato suggest that human consciousness has sense of reality beyond any of the "senses", for instance in religious hallucinations, such as feeling a 'presence'. Automatism seems common. 4 & 5: There are 'once-born' people for whom happiness and optimism come naturally, eg Walt Whitman. Comfortable 'healthy-midedness' has overtaken the old hell-fire theology in Christianity, and is strong in the 'Mind-cure movement' or 'New Thought'. Different religions suit different people. 6 & 7: Many feel that the 'sick soul' needs curing, eg Luther, Tolstoy. Buddhism and Christianity are religions of deliverance: man must die to an unreal life before he can be born into the real life. 8: Many punish themselves for feeling that the self is divided into an evil and unhealthy and the good and godly, eg Augustine . 9 & 10: Many religions hold to conversion, where a self, wrong inferior and unhappy, becomes unified, right superior and happy, in consequence of its firmer hold upon religious realities. Conversion may wane, but so too can love. 11, 12 & 13: Saintly people have an energy and hopefulness, sometimes in excess, but always instructive to the rest of us., eg, Loyola, St Theresa, General Booth. 14 & 15: New religious ideas are heresies, but they can become stifling orthodoxy. Devoutness can become fanaticism, purity can be obsessive, tenderness and charity can become willingness to accept evil, and asceticism lead to self-torture. 16 &17 Mystical experiences briefly grant hugely significant revelations, and leave the mystic feeling as if his own will were in abeyance. They are incapable of being expressed in words, but of immense importance to these who have them. Hindu 'yoga', Buddhism, Suffism and Christian 'orison' offer methods of achieving them. 18: Philosophy cannot prove any religion true, but it can show up obvious errors and might begin a science of religions. 19: Prayer cannot change the physical world directly, but it can bring comfort and security. Many people have seemingly genuine experience of being directed by the divine, even if they may come from the 'B-region' of their own minds. 20: Psychologically, religion can grant new zest to life and give assurance of safety and love. The warring gods and formulas cancel each other, but there is a certain uniformity in an uneasiness about the self and its salvation through faith. NB: Personally, I agree in principle with the Buddhistic doctrine of Karma. For practical life, the chance of salvation is enough.

"The highest flights of charity, devotion, trust, patience, bravery to which the wings of human nature have spread themselves have been flown for religious ideals." 1: This is a study of the psychology of original religious experiences, not religious institutions. Religious geniuses have often shown nervous instability, such as George Fox or St Theresa. Medical materialism, sexual origins refuted. Perhaps the neurotic temperament is best to receive religious inspiration. 2: Religion is the feelings, acts, and experiences of individual men, in relation to whatever they consider divine, which is always solemn. Christian saints callous to disease in a unique way. Religious men alone have self-will happily subjected to the divine. 3: The deities are known only in idea. Kant and Plato suggest that human consciousness has sense of reality beyond any of the "senses", for instance in religious hallucinations, such as feeling a 'presence'. Automatism seems common. 4 & 5: There are 'once-born' people for whom happiness and optimism come naturally, eg Walt Whitman. Comfortable 'healthy-midedness' has overtaken the old hell-fire theology in Christianity, and is strong in the 'Mind-cure movement' or 'New Thought'. Different religions suit different people. 6 & 7: Many feel that the 'sick soul' needs curing, eg Luther, Tolstoy. Buddhism and Christianity are religions of deliverance: man must die to an unreal life before he can be born into the real life. 8: Many punish themselves for feeling that the self is divided into an evil and unhealthy and the good and godly, eg Augustine . 9 & 10: Many religions hold to conversion, where a self, wrong inferior and unhappy, becomes unified, right superior and happy, in consequence of its firmer hold upon religious realities. Conversion may wane, but so too can love. 11, 12 & 13: Saintly people have an energy and hopefulness, sometimes in excess, but always instructive to the rest of us., eg, Loyola, St Theresa, General Booth. 14 & 15: New religious ideas are heresies, but they can become stifling orthodoxy. Devoutness can become fanaticism, purity can be obsessive, tenderness and charity can become willingness to accept evil, and asceticism lead to self-torture. 16 &17 Mystical experiences briefly grant hugely significant revelations, and leave the mystic feeling as if his own will were in abeyance. They are incapable of being expressed in words, but of immense importance to these who have them. Hindu 'yoga', Buddhism, Suffism and Christian 'orison' offer methods of achieving them. 18: Philosophy cannot prove any religion true, but it can show up obvious errors and might begin a science of religions. 19: Prayer cannot change the physical world directly, but it can bring comfort and security. Many people have seemingly genuine experience of being directed by the divine, even if they may come from the 'B-region' of their own minds. 20: Psychologically, religion can grant new zest to life and give assurance of safety and love. The warring gods and formulas cancel each other, but there is a certain uniformity in an uneasiness about the self and its salvation through faith. NB: Personally, I agree in principle with the Buddhistic doctrine of Karma. For practical life, the chance of salvation is enough.
